A 12.6-mile open water swim competition will take place this fall in the Santa Monica Bay, with a course linking the Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach piers.

The Distance Swim Challenge was announced this week by the environmental group Heal the Bay and OptimisSport, a company that develops training tools for physical therapists, athletic trainers and coaches.
The Oct. 16 event will also include shorter legs to accommodate swimmers of varied skills, as well as relay competitions with four- and eight-person teams.

"We hope this event will inspire people to challenge themselves," OptimisCorp CEO Alan Morelli said in a statement.

Proceeds from the competition will support Heal the Bay and other local organizations, as well as the Exceeding Expectations Foundation, a nonprofit that works with at-risk children.
